Spotlight on New Bedford, MA

By Topher Gleason, Metro South Territory Manager

As April showers begin to sprout Mayflowers, the weather finally seems to be turning from bitter cold to a refreshing spring season. During this time there’s no better place to spend than the beautiful and historic City of New Bedford. With a rich maritime history, New Bedford offers a traditional feeling with a very contemporary take on food and craft beer. It is hard to not feel the energy and creativity that seems to permeate the city, which inspired the epic of Moby Dick by Herman Melville. When finished exploring the New Bedford Whaling Museum and various art and historical sites, you have an opportunity to eat and drink at some of the best restaurants and bars in the area!

Once in town a great place to experience the nautical theme of New Bedford is The Black Whale. Located on the waterfront, The Black Whale specializes in seafood and has one of the freshest raw bars in the area. As long standing Mayflower supporters you’ll be able to pair the New Bedford Sea Scallops with our IPA or a rotating seasonal beer. If you’re interested in a homemade grassroots vibe, then dNB Burgers is the perfect stop. Priding themselves on creating a community atmosphere with a “from scratch” menu, dNB is focused on every aspect of their menu. Whether it’s the spicy ketchup, pickles, and sauces everything is brilliantly made in house. Wash the hand cut fries and freshly ground burger down with a can of Golden Ale or one of our other delicious beers that can be found on their rotating draft lines. Just a little further down the cobblestone on N Water Street we have Quahog Republic Whaler’s Tavern. A cozy tavern which offers craft cocktails and a cask aged mai-tai, Whaler’s Tavern is a terrific place to try our newest Spring Seasonal beer Fresh Start. While enjoying the 14 tap draft system I highly recommend ordering the Quahog Republic Cubano which is one of the best. Right around the corner, on Front Street, we have Rose Alley Ale House. With 38 draft selections we are happy to be frequently featured among the other great beers offered. Daily Ration Session IPA was recently among the selections during the yearly Beer Summit. The flavorful and light beer went great with the huge selection of sauces and dry rubs offered for their famous chicken wings. Right next door we have Cork Wine and Tapas, an eclectic restaurant that focuses on the customer experience. Concentrating on creative and dynamic food options Cork caters to both meat eaters and vegetarians. To pair with the exquisite tapas and full entrées the drink menu includes a vast wine, cocktails and beer selection with Mayflower IPA regularly featured.

Just a couple blocks down the cobblestone on Purchase Street we find the first craft beer tavern in New Bedford, The Pour Farm Tavern and Grille. Offering patrons 24 draft beer options and various bottles and cans has made Pour Farm a staple of the city. Passionate and enthusiastic about craft beer you are able to find the newest and greatest at all times being poured here. Any Mayflower beer that is limited edition or special to the brand you can expect to see on draft as well as cask beers which we love to experiment with. While enjoying the incredible craft beer selection make sure to order the Brisket Cheese Steak, a popular go to for all those who frequent this outstanding establishment. Across the street we find No Problemo. With a punk and skateboarding influenced decor, you will find the best Mexican food in the region. A strong supporter of the local music and comedy scene No Problemo is a phenomenal place to have some laughs, eat mouthwatering burritos, and drink various Mayflower beers such as IPA, Porter, and Fresh Start. Just outside of the downtown area we find Airport Grille. This upscale American Bistro is found at 1569 Airport Road and is a terrific restaurant for locally sourced produce and seafood. With a beautiful view of the local airport, customers can dine on excellent food options while sipping fresh Mayflower IPA. One of  New Bedford’s best kept secrets Airport Grille is serving outstanding plates with a wine and beer selection that rivals any competitor.

On May 19th Mayflower Brewing Company will be participating at the 3rd annual Red, White, & Brew at the Zoo hosted by Buttonwood Park Zoo. We will be pouring beers and looking forward to seeing a huge crowd to help raise money for the Zoo as well as enjoying the company of friends and family to kick off a great season. Below we have posted the information involving tickets and details. New Bedford is a truly special place and as the weather becomes more hospitable, it is the perfect time of year to visit. This city understands the importance of local business and making sure to offer a complete customer experience. While New Bedford is always busy and a fun place to go, the addition of nice weather only helps magnify the qualities of this nautical sanctuary.
